Formula 2 racer Alexander Albon admits that he wants the vacant Toro Rosso seat for 2019 and he is prepared to fight for the position.

Albon used to be on Red Bull's books in the past, but was dropped by the company back in 2012 - and he is now one of the fastest drivers in Formula 2.

He races for DAMS and he sits third at the moment in the F2 drivers' standings behind leader George Russell, who drives for Mercedes, and highly-rated McLaren junior driver Lando Norris.

Albon believes that if he can slightly improve his performances and stay in the picture for the F2 title, then he may have a chance of securing Toro Rosso's vacant seat for next season.

The seat is vacant with Pierre Gasly announcing that he is making the step up to Red Bull next season following Daniel Ricciardo's decision to join Renault earlier this month.

Brendon Hartley, Toro Rosso's other driver, well, his future is still very uncertain with the Kiwi failing to impress regularly this season.

"I need to do better if I want to have a seat with Toro Rosso next year," the 22-year-old HAMS driver admitted to F1i.com.

"I think it's the only place I have (the opportunity) to drive with a team in F1. Dr (Helmut) Marko isn't my biggest fan and I need to impress him more to have a chance.

"I think the only chance I have to get to F1 is to have some good results and finish strong. I have to concentrate on Formula 2, finish well and after that we will see."
