There have been some changes to the sporting and technical regulations for the 2025 Formula 1 season. The most important point is that the FIA wants to use AI in motorsport, so that it can be easier for stewards to make decisions during a session.
The FIA World Motor Sport Council met on Wednesday 11 December for the last meeting of 2024. During this meeting several decisions were made. An important point is that the FIA wants to make more use of artificial intelligence (AI). The federation wants to use this to create better and clearer situations within the sport.
"The technical and safety department of the FIA is working on introducing new systems using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the provision of information for decision-makers," the FIA wrote in the meeting report. The FIA wants to use AI for three reasons:
There is also a small change for the drivers. For example, under certain extreme conditions, the use of a cooling system for the driver may become mandatory. This device has been developed by the FIA in recent years in collaboration with the Formula 1 teams. The FIA will also use more gender-neutral language, in order to promote inclusivity.
In addition, adjustments have been made to the financial regulations of the premier class of motorsport. For example, sustainability initiatives are excluded from the cost cap, in order to promote environmentally friendly innovations in Formula 1. The technical regulations for 2026 have also been further refined, so that teams can work on aerodynamics for the first time from 1 January 2025.

The FIA are late to the party, teams are already using AI. To run through vast amounts if data for aero, strategy, performance. The FIA should have a Stewards center running remotely with real-time feeds of video and data. AI can analyze vast amounts of historical race data, incidents, and rulings to identify precedents. This ensures that similar incidents are judged consistently across races and seasons, reducing claims of bias or inconsistency. AI-powered tools can analyze live data (e.g., car telemetry, GPS positioning, and on-board footage) to quickly detect potential rule breaches such as track limits violations, collisions, or unsafe driving. By processing data in real-time, AI can flag incidents that may require steward review, speeding up the process. AI systems can automatically detect breaches of objective rules, like exceeding track limits or pit lane speed limits, ensuring consistent and impartial enforcement without human error. AI can instantly replay incidents from multiple camera angles and overlay telemetry data for a more comprehensive view. This assists stewards in making informed decisions more efficiently. Like I said the FIA are late to the ? party.
Well, if it is properly programmed, then the decision making will be more consistant, solely based on the circumstances and conditions and wont have any bias based on the driver in question .... unless one of the parameters keyed into the programme is what passport the particular driver holds as well?
How is ai going to create consistency when it'll base all decisions on a database of inconsistent precedents.
Like the one in 2021 where Max got away with so much? Probably :)
And AI is only as good as the data you feed it. Just saying.
Well they could try using ai this season .but is ai going be any better than the stewards
I would like to see what info they give it because it seems like they don't even know. The rules are too open for interpretation, etc. Although looking at the latest version of the Tesla self-driving, it is possible with a lot of effort, but in F1 it will be new and just create chaos.
Didn't a tesla self drive run a deer over recently without braking or steering in any way? Just ploughed straight on
And a few years ago, didn't one take its driver's head off when it ran under the trailer of an articulated lorry?
"The rules are too open for interpretation" No they're not. :) Whatever gave you that idea? Show me some.
Considering you've done nothing but whinge about the stewards every time Max is rightfully penalised, I'm surprised you're not thinking that anything would be better.
