Racing Point Force India have a tough task on their hands for the rest of the season. The team reborn from the ashes of the Sahara Force India team scored 32 points in their first two races, but a blank in Singapore put a dent on their recovery.
Sergio Perez and
Esteban Ocon collided with each other on the opening lap of the Singapore Grand Prix, with Ocon going into the barriers and out of the race and Perez struggling on, crashing with Sergey Sirotkin and finishing an eventual P16.
The team will be keen to get back to points scoring ways as they hunt down McLaren, who are 26 points ahead of them in the Constructors’ Championship.
If Force India had not had all of their points taken away after the buyout of administration, they would be level with Renault in P4, which shows the pace their car has had this season.
Otmar Szafnauer, CEO, says that despite the poor Singapore result, there were positives.
He said: “We all felt incredibly flat after the disappointment of the race in Singapore, but at the same time you have to learn from these events, put them behind you and become stronger. Our drivers know that it cannot happen again and we’ve dealt with the matter now and moved on.
“There was one positive from Singapore – the pace of the car. Sergio qualified a comfortable seventh and the upgrades brought us an immediate performance step. There is definitely more to come and Sochi is a good circuit to learn more about the new aero package. I think we can be up there this weekend fighting to be the best of the rest and scoring good points.”
