In a few weeks, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix will be held at the Imola circuit. For F1 fans wishing to ever attend a Grand Prix at this historic circuit, it will almost certainly be the last chance to do so. Formula 1 will soon announce that the expiring contract with the circuit will not be renewed. At least, that is what can be deduced from a press conference held on the other side of the world. The mayor of Mexico City announced during a press moment that a new contract will be signed on April 30th with Formula 1, to keep the Mexican Grand Prix in the calendar for several more years.
Yes to Mexico, no more Imola
The calculation is simple, provided the mayor is correct in her statements. For 2026, there will definitively be 24 Grand Prix on the schedule, as GPblog was able to report recently. That's the same number as this year, with the race in Madrid being added to the schedule. Consequently, one Grand Prix has to make way.
Only Mexico and Imola do not have a contract for the coming season. If indeed a new contract is made with Mexico, then Imola would be automatically discarded. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali earlier hinted at this, by saying that two races in Italy is a lot.
Reportedly, the Mexican Grand Prix will remain on the F1 calendar for at least three more years.
