Brendon Hartley suffered a major crash in final practice at the British Grand Prix, when his suspension failed under braking for the high-speed Brooklands corner. Hartley’s suspension seemed to snap, sending him into a spin and an eventual heavy impact with the barriers.
Thankfully the New Zealander was unhurt, but teammate Pierre Gasly says that his team are unsure what happened to Hartley’s Toro Rosso.
Hartley has had a difficult time in his first full season in F1, plagued by bad luck and crashes. This Silverstone incident is the last of an ever-lengthening list of bad luck for Hartley in F1.
He still only has one point, scored in Azerbaijan, compared to Gasly’s 18 and Hartley may not be able to take part in qualifying due to the extensive damage to his car.
Hartley has been cleared to drive again by the medical team.
Gasly took no further part in practice after Hartley’s accident, with the Toro Rosso mechanics examining the Frenchman’s car to try and find a reason for the crash.
Gasly told Sky Sports: “Brendon had a massive crash and at the moment we cannot understand exactly what’s happened.
“It seems like the suspension broke on braking and they wanted to double check everything and they were not confident to let me back out before the end of the session.
“Tough weekend so far with the engine issue yesterday and FP2 I didn’t run much, this morning only one lap, so quite difficult for us.”
Despite Hartley’s massive crash, Gasly is hoping to see him teammate back on track in qualifying.
He said: “I spoke to him, he seems a bit shocked after that because it’s not what you expect on braking to lose one wheel like this, but he was ok and that’s the most important [thing].
“Hopefully we can get the two cars back on track for qualifying, it will be difficult but hopefully I can go out.”
