Romain Grosjean is still hanging on to his dream of becoming world champion in Formula One in his career but maintains that he did not join Haas as a stepping stone to Ferrari.
Haas have a close relationship with Ferrari, and after four impressive years with Lotus which yielded ten podiums, some expected Grosjean to be top of the list when the ageing Kimi Raikkonen retires.
However, the mercurial Finn shows no signs of stopping, and the combined factors of Grosjean’s age, drop in form and the emergence of Charles Leclerc has made Grosjean to Ferrari look impossible.
However, Grosjean denies that his Haas move was simply to get in the back door for a Ferrari seat.
The Frenchman told Motorsport.com: “I still want to try and be world champion.
"The one thing that nobody knows is 2021 [new rules are set to be introduced] and I’m hoping there is going to be more chances to win races.”
During 2017 and 2018, only two drivers from outside the top three teams have set foot on the podium, both in chaotic Azerbaijani Grads Prix, Williams’ Lance Stroll in 2017 and Force India’s Sergio Perez in 2018, each finishing third.
Grosjean added: “We’ll see what the future’s like. I am very happy to be part of it. Haas is the best midfield team now, that’s why everyone wants to come here - we are doing amazing and I never came here to go to Ferrari.
“I would never hide the fact that I would dream to go to Ferrari but it wasn’t that ‘I’m going to Haas to go to Ferrari.’
“Who knows what lies in the future? For now, I like to keep the business going here because I think we’ve got more we can do.”
