Renault driver Nico Hülkenberg has said it was a "tough Friday" for himself and his team alike, as himself and Daniel Ricciardo failed to crack the top ten in either practice session on Friday.
Running 29 laps in both FP1 and FP2, Hülkenberg finished 13th and 18th in those sessions respectively at Suzuka, where there will be no running on Saturday meaning FP3 is scrapped.
Friday's running was the only track time drivers got before qualifying at 10am local time on Sunday with all track activities being cancelled on Saturday due to typhoon Hagibis.
With that in mind, Friday's difficult day for Renault won't help them in preparation for qualifying, although Hülkenberg knows his times on Friday weren't all that representative.
“It was a tough Friday for us," the 32-year-old admitted.
"We made some changes between sessions that seemed to help. We had some balance problems with a lack of grip, especially in Sector One, but worked through it to end the day happier.
"The times aren’t strictly representative as we ran out of sync with the others. It’s a day off tomorrow with the typhoon coming in but we will look at everything in detail and be ready to go straight away on Sunday.”
