Lewis Hamilton has been hit with a five-second penalty for crossing the white pit entry line in the first half of the 2024
Austrian Grand Prix. The seven-time World Champion picked up understeer on the way into the pits. Mercedes were attempting an undercut on
Carlos Sainz. They didn't make it through but did close the gap on the
Ferrari driver.
Hamilton apologises for the mistake
Hamilton was informed of the penalty over the team radio. He then apologised with a
"sorry guys".
Toto Wolff then came on the radio with one of his motivational speeches. He reminded Hamilton still has
"everything to play for".
Earlier in the race, Hamilton had to fight with his teammate
George Russell. He lost this duel and then was asked by the team to let Carlos Sainz through. The team felt the risk of a ten-second penalty was too strong for an overtaking move off the track.
