Daniel Ricciardo achieved his third career pole position on Saturday, with his team-mate Max Verstappen just behind him in P2; as Red Bull locked out the front row. Team principal Christian Horner has heaped the praise on the pair after a "phenomenal" qualifying session.
Red Bull have enjoyed recent success at the high-altitude Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez; with Verstappen winning there last season as well as being the quickest in all three free practice sessions before qualifying.
It looked as if the Dutchman would claim pole in Mexico City as well, before an extraordinary lap from his Australian team-mate ensured he'd be starting at the top of the grid.
"Amazing! An incredible last lap from Daniel which really seemed to come from nowhere," Horner said on Ricciardo's pole-setting lap to The Checkered Flag. "On the last run to be able to string together a perfect lap was a mighty performance.
"Another great lap from Max, who has looked so competitive all weekend meant we locked out the front row for the first time since Austin 2013, a phenomenal team performance."
Horner has warned against complacency and knows that there is a job to be done later this evening to ensure their good preparation for the Mexican Grand Prix isn't wasted at all.
"Our priority now has to be to try and convert these fantastic grid positions into a haul of points tomorrow," Horner continued. "The team has worked very hard for this so it is crucial that we now make the most of it."
