The football season is just around the corner and with F1 in it’s summer break, we thought we’d have a look at how F1 teams compare to football teams! Today we start with the English Premier League!
Mercedes – Manchester City
Big investment = Big reward it seems, in both F1 and football. Mercedes were at the front of the midfield as recently as 2012, before a big investment in 2014, and the acquisition of Lewis Hamilton in 2013. Similarly, Manchester City did not pose too much of a threat before big investment from their Saudi owners brought in some big names of the football world. City dominated last season and are favourites to do the same this year, similarly to Mercedes.
This is not because they are both red. These two are very successful teams in their respective sports but have both been through somewhat of a barren run in recent times. However, both sides seem to be on the up, with Ferrari winning plenty of races and Liverpool reaching the Champions League final. The Reds of Merseyside are many people’s second favourites to win the league this year.
McLaren and Arsenal have enjoyed success in the past, but it has not been forthcoming in recent years. McLaren haven’t scored a podium since 2014 and Arsenal have finished outside the top four for the past two seasons. The similarities continue, with both teams undergoing major changes at the top in the hope of bringing back the glory days. Arsenal have replaced long term manager Arsene Wenger and Eric Boullier has left McLaren.
