It’s time for the FIFA World Cup once again, and it will be a great month for fans of both football and F1, with the French, Austrian and British GPs on the horizon. And that got us thinking, which F1 teams are similar to which football teams in the World Cup?
McLaren – Argentina
Used to be a lot better than they are now, but still not an awful team, McLaren have improved this time around, but they do have one shining light: Fernando Alonso. Similarly, Lionel Messi is Argentina’s saviour and without him they would not be at this World Cup. Obviously lots goes on behind the scenes but when it comes to performance on the big stage, these two teams are both often carried by one man.
Renault – England
A classic name of F1, Renault were once the best team in the business, but now they are not. England have won football’s biggest prize, but that was 52 years ago now. However, there is hope for all English fans, not this year, but in the future. The team is on the way up, and it seems like a new era has started, much like at Renault, where they are looking good to secure a fourth placed constructors’ finish after a few disappointing seasons.
Williams – The Netherlands
Ok, we know The Netherlands aren’t at this World Cup, but stay with me. The Dutch football team are renowned for their stylish play and individuals who have changed the entire sport. This is the same for Williams, who have won several titles with innovation, and have dared to do what others have not. Furthermore, both Williams and The Netherlands are at their lowest point for years. Williams are languishing at the bottom of the Constructors’ standings whilst the Dutch players will sadly be watching from home.
