Nicholas Latifi is on his farewell tour in Formula 1. The Williams driver has yet to capture any points this season, but is still making headlines in other ways. For example, on Friday, when he took a wrong turn in free practice.
The Canadian thought he had arrived at the chicane on the Suzuka circuit, but had in reality arrived at an exit lane. By necessity, Latifi had to turn his car around to get back on track. The turning didn't go entirely smoothly either.
To The Race Latifi says he secretly found the incident quite funny. “It was totally my fault, but I was getting some calls from my engineer – we were supposed to do another lap but then we did a last-minute thing to box, so I was changing something on my steering wheel, looking down, and when I looked up I saw the turn – which was obviously not the right turn!"
It was then reported via television footage that Latifi did not know what happened, that there was something with the car, but he was okay. A strange message, which in retrospect did not belong to the moment of taking the wrong turn. In the conversation over the radio, Latifi was referring to the failed attempt to turn around.
I know he has options after he leaves F1 for a driver of his skill and ability. Amazon and Uber have both reached out and offered him a position as a driver and luckily all their vehicles are equipped with GPS.
Maybe race cars will be fitted with a GPS which tells drivers “Wrong Way. Turn Around”, if drivers goes the wrong way in future. ?
