Lawerence Stroll believes his team can become "one of the greatest teams in the paddock" after
Formula 1's 2021 rule overhaul. Stroll became the owner of
Racing Point [Force India] in the summer after buying the team out of administration
Stroll's backing gives the team funding and a secure future. In an interview with Formula 1.com, he gives some details on his vision of Racing Point's future.
"Short-term, we want to stay fighting where we are. Medium-term, we want to try and fight for third, instead of fourth. Long-term, when all the rules, change, hopefully, we will be one of the greatest teams in the paddock," claims Stroll.
Stroll brings in his son,
Lance Stroll, from
Williams. For this move, he picked up plenty of criticism as it meant
Mercedes junior driver
Esteban Ocon missed out on a seat in the upcoming season.
However, Stroll insists he "never planned" to buy a team and suggested F1's plan for the future, which includes the proposed budget cap gave him the believe it would be a worthwhile investment.
"I looked at it as a business opportunity, coupling that with spending time speaking to F1 to understand their vision from 2021, which is some sort of budget cap and some sort of better revenue distribution to the smaller teams," he added.
"That makes great business sense for a company like this, as this is the model of direction closer to where the future will go.
"I've been around the sport for 30 years. There are only 10 teams and if you look at the value of the franchise, whether it be NFL, UK rugby or football, the value of an asset like this, treated properly, cherished over time significantly appreciates. I think the same thing will happen here."
