Is Formula 1 becoming boring because of Max Verstappen's supremacy? Helmut Marko does not think so. On the contrary, the Austrian stresses how impressive it is that Verstappen keeps developing.
Lando Norris was clear this weekend: Formula 1 is getting boring because of all Max Verstappen's victories. According to the McLaren driver, it is only natural that F1 fans are dropping out. If you already know who is going to win, why even watch? Marko, Red Bull's top advisor, however, disagrees with the young Briton.
"It is not boring at all," Marko said in a conversation with De Telegraaf. According to Marko, skiing also used to have dominant periods, but you should embrace those top athletes instead. "If a sportsman's performance is extraordinary, then you should accept that and be able to appreciate it. And above all, don't say it's boring. It is to Max's credit."
Marko even sees that Verstappen continues to develop. "In terms of qualifications, Max has clearly taken a step. It was about time too, because in terms of pole positions he is still a bit behind compared to victories," jokes the Austrian. Verstappen reportedly spent a lot of time with Gianpiero Lambiase to find a better setup for Saturday's fast lap, without losing his race pace on Sunday.
For now, Marko seems to be right. Where Norris fears viewers will walk away, that is far from the case. Viewing figures continue to rise, and more and more Grands Prix are selling out. So, in that respect, the Verstappen era does not yet resemble previous eras when fans really stopped showing up.
The Australian GP this year was even more boring than the last race despite Max's DNF. It's just how the sport is most of the time.
F1 has become boring for different reasons not for Max... The problem there is no drama in the race, there used to be more engine failures, tyre failures even some venues has issues (kinda like the vegas drain covers), but everything runs smooth, teams aren't trying to win anymore by any means neccesarry because they just simple can with the new budget limitation, the only way to win is through a technical improvement and those happen rarely and usually only few F1 engineers can do it. We should let the team spend again whatever they want, this will allow big teams like Merc pouring more money to put the pressure on RB techincal marvels, we should see McLaren also pushing the limits of the PU because they can afford buying more parts to repair their engines. This is the main reason F1 has become boring... the budget cap, the sad part is we did this to attract more teams to join F1 and to make Williams great again and those has happened in the last 3 years, so maybe is time to introduce BOP.
I'm really enjoying the driver matchups between the teams this season. The story archs, next season shifts etc. Very interesting indeed. And the occassional fireworks on track (e.g. Leclerc overtaking Russell, Alonso's save). Not at the edge of my seat, sure, but not bored either.
I was still watching when Lewis was wining 103 wins for 8 years...F1 is not boring..
It is boring. Obviously Helmut is enjoying it because it's Max dominating! I remember Helmut complaining during merc dominant years!
Schumi's time and Lewis' time was similarly boring...if you'd like to go that route...
Was Marko really complaining about fans quiting and F1 being boring because of the MB dominance or was he complaining about not having a good enough engine in order to be able to compete? Not the same thing ?
I am not referring specifically to fans leaving. I am generalizing that when your team is dominating, it's ok, but when it's another team, it's not. Helmut moaned a lot during merc dominance.
Yes, Marko moaned back then. But it was mostly due to the Renault engines which was out of RB's control. Also about Ferrari and MB refusing to deliver them PU's. Notice that he stopped the moaning once they signed with Honda despite of the fact that RB wasn't still performing on top level and MB was still dominating? These cases can't simply be compared. MB and Ferrari can only blame themselves because they have everything under their own control, car and engine. While Ferrari is as usual keeping their heads down and trying to improve, the most moaning in the 3rd season is coming from MB for something they can only blame themselves.
Yep not only was he right, but Renault wasn't delivering despite of the many promises they were making. This time with the 2022 aero rules, no team got a headstart like MB had back then. RB, and to a certain extent Ferrari, simply made a better job. MCL did a great job in beating Ferrari last race. But this could also be the sprint-weekend-effect.
He was moaning a lot about Mercedes and the advantage they had over everyone with regards hybrid development! Admittedly he was quite right!
It can both be impressive AND boring Helmut... Max himself is nothing but boring of course, but the sport in it's current status is quite boring compared to a year with a championship fight. There isn't much to disagree with in Norris' statement... And TV numbers are different to people showing up at GPs... That's a whole experience, you don't just go there to find out who wins.
TV numbers are rising as well... "Max himself is nothing but boring of course" You mean 'anything but boring' I suppose? ?
whoops, yes sorry that's what I meant ?. TV numbers can be rising as well since Liberty is doing anything in its power to grow viewership but I think a fight at the top would accelerate things massively.
Owh, yes agreed! But it has proven very difficult to orchestrate that!
I don't think it's boring, the unpredictability of who finishes on the bottom step of the podium is riveting.
but people are watching racing and other kinds of sport primarily to see who will win, not who will finish second, third or tenth...
Yup I agree but unfortunately F1 doesn't have that luxury. EDIT : My first post had a slight tinge of sarcasm in it, it seems it went unnoticed.
Real F1 fans care about great battles between all drivers no matter what position. Just have a look at the comment section of the sprint race about the fight for 3rd place. Number of viewers are going up as well. If someone only cares about who is winning, well, then they have plenty of other racing series to watch instead of crying all day long in comments about how boring F1 is. But strangely, not many seem to care about those race series. It wouldn't even be a bad thing if those pseudo fans will stop watching F1.
To appreciate that Max is performing at an outstanding level in the most dominant car is certainly a marvel to behold no question, but to state that it doesn't make F1 boring is way off the mark. I imagine that fans are turning away in their droves in the same way as they did during the MS/Ferrari, SV/RB and LH/MB years, I bet ticket sales will be suffering. I rang up the Silverstone ticket office and asked them what time the GP race would start on the Sunday, and they asked me what time could I get there !! That was my attempt at a joke btw ??
"I imagine that fans are turning away in their droves in the same way as they did during the MS/Ferrari, SV/RB and LH/MB years, I bet ticket sales will be suffering." Well...apparently that is still not the case (yet). I mean, I agree that I have a dofferent kind of excitement forntaces now, so I would also enjoy a title fight as well! Part of me even wouldnt mind Max making the move to Merc of AM after 2025...just to see if he can do this again with another stable! By then not much else to prove for Max in F1!
The sport is boring, but I can only level one criticism at RB. We can't blame them for doing their job if building the fastest car they can or Max extracting the most out of it. We can blame them for fielding a useless #2 driver, who can only beat Max when Max has a issue during the race weekend, like grid penalties or mechanical failure. Some here think Perez is doing ok...yes he is doing ok,but we could have seen Prost vs Senna again and we are not.We could have had a battle at the front, but RB doesn't want it. Now,I understand their reasoning for it,but I don't agree with it. For everything else boring,we can blame the F1 and Liberty..... Cars are big,fat and lazy, too aero dependent and needs to be managed all race long. Budget and testing caps means that the big difference at the start of a new regulations cycle takes 4-5 years to close or needs the regs changed for their to be a shake up. Soon we will be heating again that teams are giving up this year, using their resources for next year and thereafter. Many racing incidents are penalized ,since the FIA only wants to see DRS overtakes....no elbows out racing allowed over here. More money and thought goes into the production aspect, that's why we have as many graphics in F1 now as they have in Baseball,Basketbaal,NFL and NHL.. Then the actual racing that goes on,on track. What a shame.
Senna vs Prost was also one of the very rare times that something like that happened, and it was immediately a prime example of why team principles definitely dont want this! Perez is not useless btw, he is a decent driver, just like Massa, Barrichello, Rosberg, and Bottas were! They aregood drivers, but lack the skill level of the elite, just like the vast majority of the rest of the grid. Them you get situations like this!
Although you can take most of what Marko says with a pinch of salt, he's spot on here. Max is as close to perfection as a driver, and he's worked hard on it. Qualification was his weak spot and he's got on top of that too. He's reduced errors to a massive degree and knows how to manage his race well. Something to be appreciated, because not many on the current grid are at that level now. He stands apart and he deserves his success.
Verstappen in 2016-2018 was at Riccardo's level. After that Riccardo in Mclaren and Alpha Tauri lost to Norris and Tsunoda. So Verstappen's level seems so good now because new regulations and RB fastest rockethip car... Now theres's no competition, but in other cirumstances (without rocketship car) I seriously doubt Verstappen could perform at the same level, probably he would have struggles like Riccardo
Marian, Tin hat at the ready, you're about to come under fire ???
Verstappen was an 18 year old in 2016. If you really think he's at the same level now, then sure, go with that.
