Alex Albon was running in the podium positions in the early stages of the Mexican Grand Prix, but the four
Mercedes and
Ferrari drivers managed to slide past him before the chequered flag. The British-Thai driver finished in P5 ahead of teammate
Max Verstappen who spent time in P20.
Mercedes pulled a masterstroke by putting both
Valtteri Bottas and
Lewis Hamilton on one-stop strategies. This option turned out to be the correct choice, but Aston Martin
Red Bull Racing committed Albon to a two-stopper early by giving him a second set of medium tyres. Marko points out the strategy as the culprit for his downfall from the podium places.
"We need to analyse the strategy well, because the pace was there. When we get back to the factory, the data must be analysed to see what we could have done better. It now seems that the strategy has cost Albon a podium," Marko tells ORF.
Ferrari reacted to Albon's early stop and pitted
Charles Leclerc. This also turned out to be a mistake as the pole sitter for the Mexican Grand Prix finished off the podium.
