McLaren have officially stated that there are no regrets about the decision to split from
Honda before the 2018 season.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa of Bahrain admitted that it was an "expensive decision" but added "It was in the long term interests of the company." when speaking to the BBC.
McLaren will be disappointed with this season as it is their worse performance ever. By sharing the same engine with Red Bull this season it is clear that the aero side of the McLaren car is not competitive.
McLaren have started to rebuild their whole team as they had believed they would be challenging Red Bull this season.
Sheikh Mohammed said "On the one hand it was frustrating. On the other, we are committed to this. The way we are heading, the change was bound to come. Tremendous respect for Honda but the relationship wasn't working."
He added, "We will see this through."
Chief Executive Zak Brown said,"The car is not good." However, he said that he was "confident we have identified our personnel and structure that ultimately led to our technical issues."
It is clear that McLaren have had some difficult times but they promise the split with Honda was the right move as they look to continue to develop and return to the top of Formula 1 next season.
