For McLaren, participating in Formula 1 is not enough. For several years, the team has also been active in IndyCar, Extreme E and, starting next season, Formula E. If it is up to CEO Zak Brown, it will not stop there.
Brown also wants McLaren to enter the 24 Hours of Le Mans as part of a sports car programme. “We have a lot going on — the stars all need to align and be in the right place at the right time, make sure we’re happy with our existing programs, but if I could wave a magic wand and be in one other racing series it would be in sports cars," Brown told Racer.
McLaren won in Formula 1 and IndyCar in the last year and a half. Competing for wins and titles is what the team is aiming for. Eventually, according to Brown, that should become the level for all McLaren Group teams. “I’ll start by dreaming that they win each one. I don’t want to be too greedy and say in one year — that would be great and I think you’ve got to shoot for the stars and see where you end up when you’re all said and done.”
McLaren took over the Formula E-team from Mercedes this year. That team became champions in the last two seasons, so the foundation for immediate success is there. In Formula 1, McLaren will appear on the grid next year with Lando Norris and newcomer Oscar Piastri.
