Upon reflection, the halo hasn’t been too bad for F1 so far. Yes, it’s ugly and still looks strange on the cars but it hasn’t really made to much difference in the grand scheme of things. But for the
Azerbaijan Grand Prix, teams will be allowed to fit mirrors to the halo, making them not only a safety feature, but also quite a good tool for visibility.
Mirrors have never been the easiest part of a Formula One car to use, and the halo seems to have made them even trickier to use this season.
This has led the FIA to allow mirrors to be attached to the halo, to help improve visibility for the drivers. This is another safety feature that has been improved by the halo, so it’s not all bad!
The FIA’s single-seater boss Nikolas Tombazis said: “We expect that you (the teams) will be able to satisfy us that the installation is sufficiently rigid to ensure that the mirror does not vibrate too much, which would limit driver visibility.”
However, the teams will not be allowed to have cameras attached to the mirrors, even if they are asked to by Formula One Management, so no cool camera angles for us fans!
