After ten years in Formula 1 driving for teams in midfield Sergio Perez finally gets the chance to race for a top team. In 2021 he hopes to have a direct shot at the world title.

Perez wants to be world champion

"Winning is everything",Perez opened the conversation with The Guardian. "You come into F1 with ambition to become a world champion but very early on I realised you have to be in the right spot at the right time to be able to contend for the title. Hopefully this year I am and I can fight for it."

Perez made the switch from Racing Point to Red Bull Racing last winter where he is now the teammate of Max Verstappen. The Mexican has always driven a car in the midfield and managed to reach the podium several times. He reached the top step of the stage in 2020 for the first time after 190 GP starts.

Bad year McLaren always carried with him

In 2013 Perez joined McLaren, which in that year for the first time since 1980 did not manage to score a podium partly due to a less good car. After a year, 'Checo' was thrown out on the street by the British racing stable. "That's something I carried through my career, for many years."

Now Perez is finally getting the desired opportunity at a top team. "My story has been about not giving up, pushing and delivering. That's the main thing for me to be able to have a car that can challenge for the championship. To prove to myself that I can do it," Perez concluded.
