Renault have confirmed that themselves and their customers will receive a power boost for qualifying on Saturday. This could help propel Red Bull forward on their home track and give McLaren some hope of a bounce back.
Qualifying is harder this weekend on a shorter, quicker track. A lap can be completed in just over 1 minute meaning cars will be closer together.
Cyril Abiteboul told
Auto Motor und Sport earlier today about the news.
"We have a qualifying mode now, for both us and our customers. Before we were able to call on a bit more performance in qualifying, but now the jump is significant."
Abiteboul added that the gains come as a result of a boost from the internal combustion engine rather than the MGU-K.
"The new MGU-K is lighter, more compact and offers better reliability because we have a better control of the temperatures without sacrificing performance."
Renault themselves have improved performances over recent weeks. They have now cemented their place in fourth. Knowing that 3rd place is out of reach, Abiteboul confirmed earlier in the week if the good performances continue in the next few races, the French team might be able to focus on their 2019 car sooner.
