Renault have announced they have gone back to their old Spec-B engine for the weekend at the
Belgian Grand Prix, revealing that the penalties they took were tactical.
Both
Daniel Ricciardo and
Nico Hulkenberg took an upgraded engine for Friday practice, along with McLaren's Carlos Sainz, but the Renault duo have switched back to an old power unit.
Renault confirmed: “We have gone back to the Spec B engine for the rest of the weekend.
“The plan is to take penalties at a track where there is a possibility to overtake, while entering a needed extra ICE into our pool for the rest of the year.”
It makes logical sense for Renault to take these penalties here, as Spa is a circuit with plenty of overtaking possibilities, so don't be surprised to see the Renault duo move through the field on raceday.
