Daniel Ricciardo joked that he would not show up to the Singapore Grand Prix if he had to take yet another engine penalty. The Australian suffered a fourth retirement in six races after another power unit issue that left him on the sidelines once more.
Speaking after the race, the Red Bull driver reflected on yet another reliability issue that has plauged him this season, moreso than his teammate Max Verstappen.
"That's good to know," he told Sky Sports when told about a possible Spec-B engine being used to avoid a penalty in Singapore.
"I hope so. If I've got a penalty in Singapore I'm probably not even going to show up.
"So I hope Christian's right and, if so, that's music to my ears."
Christian Horner had earlier suggested that Red Bull may have an older engine that they could use at the Marina Bay Circuit to avoid another grid penalty for Ricciardo as the team target a race victory at one of the last venues left on the calendar they stand a true chance at.
But once more, Ricciardo was left to ponder what might have been in a spirited fightback through the field having taken a penalty for the Italian Grand Prix to set himself up for a strong Singapore outing.
"It's not always fun. Honestly, looking at the whole year it's been pretty frustrating.
"I still don't know what it was. I passed (Lance) Stroll into turn one and then out of the corner I looked in the mirrors to see if I was clear of him and I couldn't see that well, that's when I realised there was smoke coming out the back."
