Daniel Ricciardo couldn't become the third driver to win an F1 race on their birthday after retiring from the 2018
Austrian Grand Prix. His team-mate Max Verstappen went on to win the Grand Prix in Red Bull's home country.
At one point in the race, the pairing held a 1-2, but it wasn't to be after the Australian pulled over on lap 53.
After the race, everyone was able to feel the frustrations running inside Ricciardo who wasn't expected well after qualifying. The seven-time race winner started in good form despite being surrounded by Haas cars.
"It's frustrating, it is what it is, so so yeah on one side I am obviously disappointed with how the day went because at one stage it was looking like a 1-2," Ricciardo said in an interview on PlanetF1.
Most of the front-runners experienced serious tyre blistering in the race. The Australian admitted he found it difficult after his pit-stop but still can't understand what happened to his soft tyres.
"As soon as I got in front, I could tell I wasn't able to pull away and then I saw the tyre was getting torn apart, so it was strange - I think something whether it was debris, I don't know."
His candles were well and truly blown out during the race, however, when talking to reporters after the 29-year-old remained in his standard jokey mood. He went on to add how he could sign his next contract in another sport.
"It was just one of those days. Is it too late to start my MMA career? Will Dana sign me? I am out of contract so maybe I will just swap sports all together," the Red Bull driver joked.
