In sport, time moves quickly. But there are some moments we can never move on from. Ayrton Senna’s death is one of those moments.
Formula One fans alive at the time will remember where they were when they heard the terrible news.
Senna, a three-time World Champion, the biggest name in the sport, arguably the most talented driver in the history of Formula One.
It remains unknown as to why the Brazilian ran wide at Tamburello, the almost flat-out left-hand corner, on one of the most fearsome circuits in the world, Imola.
Senna began his career with Toleman in 1984 and showed us his extreme talent by taking second in the Monaco Grand Prix, a race he would go on to win six times.
Success with Renault followed, before his big move to McLaren, where he won each of his three World Championships, and formed a bitter rivalry with team-mate Alain Prost.
When the retiring Prost dominated the 1993 championship, driving for Williams, Senna jumped at the chance to join Formula One’s top team.
But it was not to be, retirements in the first two races put pressure on Senna, before his tragic accident in the 1994 San Marino GP.
Senna will always live on as a legend of the sport, a hero, an icon.
RIP Ayrton Senna, 21.03.1960 – 01.05.1994.
