The new Formula 1 season will start in March. All eyes are once again on Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, who put in insane performances during last season, but according to Samarth Kanal, they both have to watch out for their teammate.

The journalist from the official website of Formula 1 is expecting a lot from Sergio Perez and George Russell. Whereas the Mexican already came out for Red Bull Racing last season and, together with Verstappen, just missed out on the constructors' title, Russell comes in new to Mercedes and will need time to get used to the level.

Perez and Russell could surprise in 2022

Kanal was impressed with Perez late last season. "Perez produced a defensive masterclass in Abu Dhabi, but the Mexican hopes to be more than just a ‘rear-gunner’ for the Dutchman, and perhaps help Red Bull deliver a fifth constructors’ championship too," he notes.

Despite Russell's switch, he thinks that the Brit will also be a high performer in the new season. At Williams, he proved he can tap a high level before, which means Hamilton could have a hard time with his teammate. "The 23-year-old could prove not just a rival for his seven-time champion teammate but the Red Bull drivers too."
