George Russell and Sergio Perez ensured Red Bull and Mercedes kept their rivalry alive in the 2022 French Grand Prix. The two drivers engaged in a brilliant battle at the end of the race, with Rusell pinching the final podium place whilst catching Perez sleeping.
Perez and Russell had a small bit of contact at the chicane a few laps earlier. It looked as though Perez had got the better of the British driver, but a virtual safety car caused by Guanyu Zhou allowed Russell to come back into it. The Mercedes driver had a better launch and he explained his secrets whilst talking to Sky Sports.
"I had to pre-empt it. I knew I had one chance when the VSC was ending and when you get it right you can carry the momentum. Maybe he had been a little too quick and had to brake. So, he is braking and I was accelerating," Russell said.
Mercedes introduced more upgrades in France as they start to unlock the potential they feel is in the car. They were expecting to get much closer to the front but still sat around nine-tenths behind in qualifying. Russell explains the latest view in the Mercedes garage.
"We expected to match Checo and Carlos, but Max and Charles are ahead of their teammates at the moment and Hamilton and myself are three-tenths behind them and Verstappen was cruising to the end. Since Austria, we have a clear direction of where we need to go with our development. If we go in this direction we will extract more performance. After the summer break will be exciting," Russell added.
Great drive by George, some epic attacking and the overtake on Perez was sublime.
Really like Russell but this “he turned in on me” drivel he has picked up from his teammate is so weak. Lewis is rubbing off on him, unfortunately.
Russell showing how a clean safety car restart is done. Beautuful. Last year, Masi was there to help the fake safety car champ push other drivers off the road and not do anything about it. Glad to see the best 24 year old still has actual racecraft unlike the Red Bull paid driver who is here due to daddy. Mercedes have invested in the best driver pairing on the grid. Go Russell!!!
Lol...Russell is nowhere close to Max' level, which he showed again today! Talking about pushing other drivers of the track...exactly what Russell did with his dive bomb on Perez! You're not mentionibg that now did you, but it was exactly what Max did to Lewis last year and people here cried about it ? And then the whining...George is getting more annoying and self-entitled eaxh race, now he is losing ground to Lewis. His move on Checo was niwhere done, he pushed Perez off track and then whined abiut it for multiple laps, after which Toto himself needed to shut him up... And you mentioned Max being helped by race director lol...you've seen this restart?? Hahaha...extending the safetcar ending message for 59 secs instead of the normal 10, and then putting it on green on the worst possible time for Checo in the middle of a corner ?
He did an excellent job to sling shot pass Checo on the restart. You could see that he slowed down to leave a gap 3-4 corners before the lights went green to be able to make a run at Checo to pass him when the lights turned green. Very well timed re start.
