Carlos Sainz has revealed he wants to be apart of bringing McLaren back to the pinnacle of motorsport’s premier division.
Sainz debuts at McLaren in 2019 alongside rookie Lando Norris after Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne left the Woking based team.
The Spaniard has previously raced for Toro Rosso and Renault and he’ll be in familiar territory at McLaren with the team entering their second season with a Renault engine.
He told reporters at a sponsors function in Madrid: “McLaren has gone through a year of reflection in 2018 and they have learned that they took the car in the wrong direction.
“There is ongoing restructuring throughout the team, there are many very good people and they’re trying to get back to where they were six years ago, winning races and return to fighting for F1 world championships.
“I’m going to try to be part of this journey back to the elite of F1… we’ll see what happens.”
The MCL33 is considered one of the worst cars created by the team and they will be starting from the bottom in 2019 but Sainz has appreciated the effort being put in with their car for the new season.
“With regards to the car, what I see is a very big effort on the part of the engineers,” added Sainz
