Carlos Sainz has a ten-place grid penalty to his name for the French Grand Prix. It is expected that more grid penalties will follow later this weekend.
Ferrari have installed new control electronics (CE) on Sainz's car. More new engine parts may follow as we saw with Charles Leclerc before the Canadian Grand Prix. After his engine failed in Austria, Sainz was expected to start from the back of the grid at Paul Ricard.
Other drivers changing parts are Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Hamilton opted for a new turbo and MGU-H, but the Briton is not yet penalised as it is his third part. Russell and Hamilton also both get a new CE.
Max Verstappen and Lando Norris will get a new exhaust system, but this has no further consequences for the drivers.
I see a situation towards the end of season that so many teams will get grid penalties, that they will start almost same as their original qualifying position.
They should give up on qualifying and set the grid with ping pong balls like the lotteries do
To add to the excitement they could have a second draw that hands out grid penalties to the first five drivers whose driver number pops out of the machine.
Of course the most exciting is the post race draw, where time penalties are given to a random number of drivers just to further screw things up.
