Stoffel Vandoorne's
Formula 1 career didn't go to plan after he struggled to perform at
McLaren. However, the current
Formula E driver has been given another opportunity as a test and reserve driver for
Mercedes. Vandoorne races for the Mercedes Formula E team so the partnership makes sense. The Belgian racer is pleased to be associated with the Formula 1 team but has said that his focus is on Formula E.
"It's great to be promoted within the Mercedes family," he tells the Walloon broadcaster RTBF. "I already did a lot of simulation work this winter and now I have a very busy year ahead of me. If the Grand Prix weekends do not overlap with Formula E, I will be present at the GPs, but the FE has priority.
“That would only happen if Lewis or Valtteri were seriously injured. Of course, I do not hope so, but if I am asked for my services, I am ready.”
Mercedes will hope that they don't need Vandoorne but will be pleased to know they have a back up if required.
