Monaco is perhaps the most historic Grand Prix on the
Formula 1 calendar. On April 14th 1929 the very first
Monaco Grand Prix was held, even before the Formula One Championship was born. Through the years a lot has changed on the lay-out.
Changes to the Monaco circuit through the years
In 1950, the first year a Formula One championship was organised, Monaco was added to the calendar. It became the second Formula One Grand Prix ever held. The circuit remained largely the same throughout the years, but there were some significant changes made.
Originally the start-finish was next to the harbour, followed by the narrow Gasworks hairpin. In 1963 the first corner moved to Ste Devote, a fast corner that was made tighter in 1976.
Another example is the swimming pool, which was built in 1973. For this, the layout at the harbour was drastically changed, and four bends were added leading around the pool. The last change was made in 2015, when Tabac and the straight were shifted several feet, bringing them closer to the water.
