They might be Toro Rosso's power unit supplier now but Franz Tost has revealed that he was happy that the legendary McLaren Honda partnership failed in its second guise. Honda and McLaren finally split after three years of public failure and ridicule due to unreliable and slow power units.
Speaking to Marca, Tost explained that the partnership between Toro Rosso and Honda is the opposite of the previous one between their rivals and the Japanese company.
"Our collaboration with Honda is fantastic," he said.
"Honda is a very good and very serious company and they have improved a lot compared to last year,"
Tost admitted that whilst the power unit they use won't project them into the top tier of Formula One immediately, they have seen a marked improvement in performance since switching to Honda power.
"To win races with our structure is difficult. Red Bull has three times the staff that we do. Everything is at another level, but Honda is a very successful company that wants to win races.
"In Canada we had an improvement that gave us three tenths. We will have another in America and in 2019 there will be more. I am convinced that the power unit will be very competitive."
