Despite Mercedes dominating proceedings on the Paul Ricard track last Sunday, Toto Wolff insists the top three engines are pretty equal. The Silver Arrows brought their new spec engine to the race.
Ferrari and Renault were seemingly some distance away from the Mercedes engine. Whilst many predict the German team to run away with the championship, Wolff claims it will be a season-long battle.
“I believe that all three power units are pretty close together, between Renault, Ferrari and ourselves at the moment. It’s about finding gains without compromising reliability.
“That fight is going to continue until the end of the season,” Wolff said in an interview on crash net.
Hamilton now holds a 14 point gap over rival Sebastian Vettel. It has swung both ways across the duration of the season so far. If this continues through to the second part of the season, Wolff knows it’s going to be an edge of the seat stuff for the fans.
"It can swing so quickly,” he added. “A DNF and the other guy winning makes it swing in the other direction. I don't expect this to change in whatsoever way. This is going to be the story of the season.”
