Toto Wolff knows that his Mercedes car is no longer the quickest on track. At the half-way stage, the German team lead both World Championships, but Wolff insists Mercedes need to work much harder to ensure those leads are still in place come Abu Dhabi.
He tells us in his Hungarian Grand Prix preview, that the determination and energy inside the Mercedes workforce is “ever-growing” as they approach the summer break. In Hockenheim, the Silver Arrows produced a 1-2 on their home track.
“We’ve had our fair share of bad luck this season, but it felt like our fortunes turned around in Hockenheim,” Wolff said.
“A one-two is always a great result; to get it on Mercedes home turf after starting from P2 and P14 on the grid was absolutely incredible - we also know that we did not bring the fastest car to Hockenheim.”
Wolff’s team has won every championship trophy since the turn of the hybrid era. But with Ferrari much improved, the 2018 fight is by far their toughest yet. As you’d expect, Wolff tells us how everyone in the team is working harder than ever to keep the honours coming in.
“Each and every member of our team has worked hard to make this possible and determination and energy is ever-growing. We all know that no prizes are given out for half-time champions,” Wolff added.
