Max Verstappen will compete in the United States for the first time as a two-time world champion in the king class of motorsport. The title was not celebrated grandly in Japan, but in the days that followed, the 25-year-old driver took it in his stride. Furthermore, Verstappen states that he has little concern about the fuss about Red Bull Racing exceeding its budget cap.
""It's new! But at the end of the day nothing changes," Verstappen told Sky Sports. "t's been a great year for us, nice and relaxed at the moment. Not so much celebration Sunday night because we flew back home to Europe, but then towards the weekend I invited some good friends for dinner/few drinks."
The Suzuka circuit was unable to complete the full number of laps and so everyone thought Verstappen would not be able to become world champion until Austin. Nothing proved less true, however, when 25 points were awarded to the winner after all. "It's just unlucky with the weather and not knowing what the exact rule was because the rule book is big. But when I crossed the line, it didn't matter. It was because of the penalty that I won it. For me, it never felt weird. Once I crossed the line I was not the champion and that was fine, I had a great race."
Red Bull is said to have received a proposal from the FIA this week regarding the budget cap overshoot. The Austrian racing stable is likely to convene a press conference on Friday where they will clarify a few things about the situation. Verstappen, of course, was also briefly asked about the situation. "No worries [about budget cap], from what I heard we understand where we are at from our side, it's something between the team and the FIA."
"Nothing has been confirmed as yet, but as a team we know what we have to deal with. We were clear on what we think was correct, that's why it's ongoing. It's not my job, between the team and the FIA. It's mainly because we have been doing well, they try to slow us down in anyway possible. That's how F1 works. Everyone is hypocritical, I'm fine with that. We have to focus on our job," Verstappen said.
The Red Bull Racing driver has a good 'track record' at the Circuit of the Americas and he hopes to take his 13th win of the season this weekend. That would equal a record in Formula 1. Currently, only Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel hold the record for most wins in a season, but possibly Verstappen will join that list.
