Max Verstappen is still the driver closest to a suspension in Formula 1 after the Japanese Grand Prix. But how many penalty points do Formula 1 drivers have at the moment?
Since the last Grand Prix, Verstappen is still the only driver still with eight penalty points on his license. Fernando Alonso also had eight penalty points to his name, but three of them expired on March 24, meaning Verstappen is now one closest to the twelve penalty points threshold.
If a driver hits that number, they will be faced with a one-lap suspension from the next Grand Prix, with Kevin Magnussen being the latest recipient of that in 2024.
For the Red Bull Racing driver, being cautious is crucial, as his first two penalty points will expire on June 30, which means he can only afford three penalty points until the Austrian Grand Prix, as his next two points will not expire until October 27.
Alonso is still the driver with the most penalty points after Verstappen. The Spaniard now has only five, but that is more than the rest of the grid, excluding the Red Bull Racing driver. However, there are still several drivers with four penalty points, including Oscar Piastri, Lance Stroll, Jack Doohan, and Nico Hulkenberg.
