In Sport, it’s rare to see two arch rivals heading to the same ‘home’. But in motorsport, it’s possible. In fact, it is exactly what
Sebastian Vettel and his rival Mercedes team will do this weekend in Germany. Funnily enough, they’ll both be looking to get the best out of the crowd for support.
The Silver Arrows are looking to hold off a strong attack from Ferrari driver Vettel. His 1st and 2nd placings over the last two races have helped him gain a championship lead over Lewis Hamilton. The team are looking at getting the best out of the home fans to prevent the Brit dishing out his Silverstone revenge.
“Going to Hockenheim always feels like coming home; it’s only about a 90-minute drive from the Daimler headquarters in Stuttgart,” Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said.
“We will fight hard to not only put on a good show for our friends and fans in Hockenheim but also get the result that they will be hoping for.”
Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel will be asking the home crowd to give him a support to do the complete opposite. A race win here could lift his championship advantage into a serious cushion heading over the halfway point in the season. He remembers how he first came to the track. He is yet to win at this circuit.
“I saw my first Formula One race here in 2000, and since there are always friends and family here, Hockenheim is something very special for me,” Vettel said.
