German medium Auto Motor und Sport has made an overview of where they think Max Verstappen would rank if he wouldn't have made all his errors this year. Verstappen, while being one of the most talented drivers the F1 has had in years, has been very error-prone this year. This is what things would look like if he would've driven clean races!
Verstappen spun out during the Australian Grand Prix, which cost him several places. Magnussen and Grosjean, who were in front of him, retired, but Alonso and Ricciardo still finished ahead of him because of that spin.
The Dutchman got stuck in Q1 because he crashed his RB14 hard during qualifying. During the race, Verstappen made contact with Lewis Hamilton and was forced to retire a few laps after. Hamilton finished on the podium, and Auto Motor und Sport think that Verstappen would've been right behind the Brit.
In China, Verstappen had the best papers to finish on the top step as the race unfolded. After the Virtual Safety Car, himself and his teammate Daniel Ricciardo were on much fresher tyres as they were able to pit, unlike the Ferrari and Mercedes cars. However, Verstappen collided with Sebastian Vettel when trying to overtake him, costing both him and the German valuable time. Max's teammate Daniel Ricciardo took home the win, as the Aussie overtook both Verstappen and Vettel during the collision.
In Barcelona, Max finally had a race where everything went alright. He lost a bit of front wing after colliding with Lance Stroll, but that was nothing serious. A great drive from the Dutchman on the track where he won his maiden race in 2016.
Red Bull had the best car by far on the streets of Monte Carlo, and Red Bull should've strolled to a one-two finish. However, Verstappen crashed during FP3 and the car wasn't fixed in time for qualifying, meaning he had to start from last place. He fought back to finish in P9, but that should've been either a second or first place-finish for the 20-year-old.
This is what the championship table would look like in this hypothetical.
1. Sebastian Vettel - 107 points (actual points total - 96)
2. Lewis Hamilton - 95 points (actual points total - 110)
3. Max Verstappen - 90 points (actual points total - 35)
