With Sebastian Vettel being criticized from all angles for his aggressive style of racing, the German has received support from an unexpected corner as Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff defended the four-time champion.
Vettel had another collision last weekend, as his Ferrari ran into Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes, causing Vettel to spin and to pit after one lap to fix his nose. It threw away his chances to win, causing the German to receive a flood wave of criticism from the media for his driving. His biggest competitor, however, understands why Vettel made these mistakes, as it's simply an outcome of racing at the highest level.
"He has the ambition to always win and with that comes aggression," Wolff explained to Sport1.
"That takes courage."
Wolff has sympathy for his biggest rival, despite Vettel's collisions costing Ferrari, literally and figuratively.
"His style may cause collisions at times, but those are the dramatic consequences of driving in the F1.
"Not every race gets decided in a linear way in the high-tech world of F1; sometimes it's luck, bad luck or coincidence."
