Despite seeing one of his drivers secure the drivers' championship in Mexico City, Mercedes team principal
Toto Wolff has revealed that the race was bittersweet for him, as Mercedes struggled for pace during the Grand Prix
Hamilton needed to finish seventh or higher to secure his fifth title, something which he had done in every single race this season (apart from the one in Austria when his engine failed).
He did so by finishing fourth, dropping down the order after starting from third and climbing to second place after the first chicane.
Still, Wolff wasn’t totally satisfied, as he saw some big flaws in the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
"I didn’t say anything to him [over team radio] because I was too upset over our race performance that I needed to get myself together again," he told Sky Sports F1.
"It's a fantastic title and I’m so happy for Lewis and the team. A bit bittersweet. We had a very bad race and we truly need to understand it, but we should be happy about the championship."
Mercedes always seem to struggle with title-deciding races, which is something that puzzles the Austrian too.
"We’ve seen it with other teams too. It’s about finishing in a certain position and you can see everyone seems to struggle.
"We had the same situation in DTM. When you look at Formula 1 and past championships, it’s always like this."
