Entering the 2027, another well-established motorsport team will join the WEC competition's hypercar class! Current F1 frontrunners McLaren will join the series, the team have announced!
"1995. Legendary Le Mans victory. Triple Crown glory. Ready to make our mark on the world endurance stage once again. Hypercar. 2027 World Endurance Championship. Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing said: 'We’re Back'," the team press release writes.
McLaren cars already compete in the WEC this year, in the LMGT3 category. The hyperclass field only continues to grow in the competition, with Ferrari, Alpine, Aston Martin, Porsche, Toyota, Cadillac, BMW and Peugeot already competing this season. This list only keeps on growing, as together with McLaren, Ford are also set to join in 2027, and under Genesis branding, Hyundai will join in 2026.
The team can also aim for winning the Triple Crown in a single season, after they are the only outfit having already completed this achievement out of any team - the only driver to ever completed that was Graham Hill. That would mean that McLaren drivers across would win the Monaco GP, and 24h of Le Mans and the Indy 500 in the same year.
It is currently unknown which engines will the team run as they return to the competition. Answering to GPblog in Bahrain, the team explained there are no further details to share at this time beyond Zak Brown's aforementioned words.
