It's no secret that Prince Khalid bin Sultan Al-Abdullah Al-Faisal of Saudi Arabia wants to own his own Formula 1 team. He confirmed this again during a press conference this week. Reportedly, it doesn't stop at buying a team. The Saudis want to take over Formula 1 from Liberty Media.
Money is no object in Saudi Arabia. If the oil-rich country wants something, they usually end up owning it. Holding the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in the streets of Jeddah is an example of this.
Step two would be taking over an F1 team (Aston Martin, given the link with Aramco?). And, as a crowning achievement, the prince wants to own all the commercial rights to F1, reports Auto, Motor und Sport.

Why Liberty Media is Not Selling F1 Now

Qatar would also be interested, which could lead to an interesting bidding war. According to the German outlet, however, we will have to wait a bit longer. For Liberty Media, a sale would only be an option in 2027. Only after the ten-year ownership period ends, would the eight billion dollar investment no longer be considered a speculative transaction subject to tax.
The announced acquisition of MotoGP by Liberty Media also needs to be fully completed. All in all, this means that a change of ownership of F1 is not expected in the short term.
