It's confirmed. The news we all dreaded, but kind of expected. Fernando Alonso will not compete in Formula 1 next season. The two-time champion brings an end to his 17-year journey through the sport. A journey which is summed up in the announcement he made with a video on Twitter.

No news has been released about the Spaniard's future. Though we do expect him to move over to IndyCar in hunt of the triple crown.

Alonso has started 305 Grands Prix and by the end of the season will have completed 314 races. He currently races for McLaren but has driven for many different teams during his career. His two championship wins came in the cockpit of a Renault, while he has also raced for Minardi and Ferrari.

Alosno hasn't ruled out a return to F1 in the future. He has commented: "I know they [McLaren] will come back stronger and better in the future and it could be the right moment for me to be back in series."

This will lead to speculation that he could return if he enters and wins the Indy500.
