Oscar Piastri wins the Chinese Grand Prix, ahead of Lando Norris and George Russell who rounded off the top three.
At the start George Russell got off the line better than Piastri, however the Australian defended hard and well from the Briton’s attacks, as Lando Norris managed to gain the upper hand on the Mercedes driver, taking over P2.
Max Verstappen had a poor start and was jumped by both Ferrari cars, Lewis Hamilton who took over P4 from the Dutchman, and Charles Leclerc who demoted him to P5. However, the Monegasque suffered a snap and had contact with teammate Hamilton and broke the left main plate on his front wing.
Leclerd was then told on the radio that Ferrari expected the downforce loss to be between 20 and 30 points, to which the Monegasque replied, “we can survive.”
After Verstappen reported Leclerc’s broken front wing, Pierre Gasly informed his team that Fernando Alonso’s brakes were on fire. A few moments later on lap 4, the Spaniard had to retire the car claiming he had no brakes.
Yuki Tsunoda and Alex Albon were asked by their team to keep their pace to manage their tyres, to which they both replied negatively.
On lap 9, Leclerc was in Hamilton’s DRS range, but was still unable to attack the Briton. As he felt he had more pace than his teammate he told the pitwall he wanted “plan a,” a potential one-stopper, a suggestion the team shut down due to the estimated traffic.
On lap 10 the pitstop rounds started. and on Lap 13 Yuki Tsunoda pulled off a successful undercut on Andrea Kimi Antonelli as the pair continued their fight from the Sprint the day before, for P7.
On lap 14 Hamilton and Verstappen boxed, with Hulkenberg splitting both rivals on track, only momentarily, though. Since the Dutchman was able to clear the German and move up behind Hamilton, albeit the gap to the Ferrari driver was of nearly 5 seconds.
Piastri and Russell came into the pits on lap 14 as well, in what was expected to be a one-stopper.
Esteban Ocon then performed a daring overtake on Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Down the back straight he was pushed onto the grass but still he kept his foot on the throttle and went up the inside of the Italian driver at Turn 14.
Norris boxed on lap 15 and as he made his way out it was clear it would be tight with Russell, but with the Mercedes driver’s tyres already warmed up, Russell was able to move past Norris and take P2.
On lap 18, Norris put the full might of his MCL39’s pace on display as he executed a firm overtake maneuver, putting his elbows out on the main straight making room for himself on the inside, to which Russell had to react by turning somewhat violently to the left hand side of the track, effectively yielding the position to Norris.
Albon was able to lead the Grand Prix on his birthday, albeit for a short period as both Piastri and Norris rearranged the leading positions to what they looked like before the stops.
Hamilton was then ordered to swap positions with Leclerc, to which the Briton replied with a tentative “when he’s closer, yeah.” The seven-time world champion later added that he “was catching the guys ahead.” However the Ferrari pitwall doubled down on the order and at Turn 1 of lap 21, Hamilton made way for his teammate.
As the second round of pitstops drew near Norris was advised to pick up the pace to cover off a potential undercut or mitigate a poor pitstop. Norris then did not want to push only to encounter Piastri’s turbulent air and grain his tyres. McLaren then asked Oscar to push as well.
After the halfway mark, Verstappen, who’d hardly play any role in the race, saw a bit of pace returned to his RB21, a fact his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, amusingly quipped to “better late than never.’
On lap 40 Oliver Bearman brought his Haas VF-25 into the top ten and into the points driving a strong attacking race completing overtakes on Gabriel Bortoleto, Liam Lawson, Jack Doohan and Pierre Gasly among others.
Verstappen then started reeling Leclerc, but not at the rate necessary to create an attack opportunity.
Norris started to struggle at the dying phase of the race. His tyres were graining and he complained his brake pad was changing, however this was not so as his engineer Will Joseph clarified that it was only his brake pedal going long. Anxiety seemed to be creeping in for the McLaren driver.
Yuki Tsunoda suffered a freak break on his front wing main plate as he made his way down the straight, forcing the Japanese driver to take an additional pitstop to change his front wing.
Norris was advised not to brake hard since, his braking issues could potentially result in a DNF. ‘I’d rather finish second, than not finish at all’ was essentially Joseph’s message to his driver.
Jack Doohan started to drive erratically trying to defend from Isack Hadjar, locking up and forcing the French Algerian off the track at Turn 14, and then moving late. The Stewards investigated the move that saw both rookied go off and decided to penalise Doohan with ten seconds.
Charles Leclerc then saw his fourth place under threat as Verstappen reeled the Monegasque in, getting within the DRS range of the Ferrari car in the last 5 laps and overtaking him for P4.
Pretty boring race, mostly chinese boring track is to blame for it, would be happy to see it disappear in the future. Also too much tire management, I wanna see racing, drivers going at it every lap, not saving tires from the start. I fast forwarded the race, so did not watch every lap. Only surprise was the pace of Leclerc with broken front wing. I thought losing so much from the front wing, would have a bigger impact, but he was actually faster than Hamilton. So seems Hamilton pace at sprint race, could have been an one off. Also I see now that driver of the day was voted Antonelli. There is too much fake hype around him, mostly made by F1 himself. Making him bigger than what he is. Giving driver of the day award for 8th place, just proves it. Ocon with his slow ass Haas finishing ahead of him. And hopefully Mercedes, RedBull and Ferrari will find more pace soon. It is pretty close but still McLaren clearly fastest, killing the fun factor.
Well done Piastri, amazing race, should've gotten Driver of the Day! Ridiculous that that went to Antonelli, he was being outpaced by Ocon in a Haas. What the hell was that. Disappointing and embarrassing from my man Lewis, being outclassed and owned by Leclerc with a broken wing. Also disappointing that he wasn't a team player and was hesitant to let Leclerc through, that cost Leclerc 4th place. I hope his sprint win yesterday wasn't just a one-off and false dawn, but he was really poor today. Bortoleto the rookie impressing me the most so far. He's near the back, but he has the worst car of all the rookies, and he's the only one beating his teammate. To be outqualifying Hulk is amazing on it's own, but then to also be outracing him is seriously impressive.
Actually, I thought Lewis was rather compliant in letting Leclerc through, with what was a rather minimal amount of complaining (considering that F1 drivers are always reluctant for such team orders, unless the 2 cars are on different strategies). I honestly think Lewis' results in the sprint qualy and the sprint race was because of hot temperatures and the resulting tire pressures. The mandated minimum tire pressure was too high for the sprint qualy and race, cars made it out onto the pitlane queue asap, just to let the tire pressure come down. Lewis dealt with that the best, kudos to him for that. But apparently the FIA/Pirelli lowered the minimum required tire pressure for the main qualy and race, and the temp was a lot cooler for the race, so Lewis no longer had that advantage.
Relatively speaking yes, other drivers are often even more reluctant, but I'm still disappointed he wasn't more compliant, at the end of the day it cost Leclerc 4th place. My main concern though is how poor he was today. There was so much hope and excitement after yesterday, so I'm hoping you're wrong about it just being about the temperature and tire pressures, and that he can repeat the sprint performance throughout the season.
Btw... we have to talk about the DotD vote... Doesn't matter one bit of course, but what dumbnuts were voting for Kimi Antonelli?? In my eyes they weirdest result for DotD that I can remember... Kimi started 8th, finished 8th, did nothing remarkable and his team mate was on the podium... Piastri, Russell, Ocon, Bearmann all deserved it much more. And this is not a knock on Kimi btw, who did okay-ish today after a great performance in Melbourne, but its simply a weird voting result!
DOTD has to be Piastri. Didn't put a foot wrong and won the race.
...or Ocon... 7th in the HAAS was amazing! And as well know with Max all these years, starting from pole and winning, faultless or not, usually is not been seen as DotD worthy somehow.
Haas is performing a lot better wothout that flexiwing. Nice to see them in the mix
Unfortunately a bit cocky already, but he indeed had a way better case for DotD yes
Exactly! I was just saying the same thing. I feel like there must've been some glitch or something, it's absolutely ridiculous that went to Antonelli!
Not a super exciting race, with tyre savings being the main focus of all teams. But still, a pretty good race to watch with Max' overtake on Leclerc as best move of the race. McLaren the fastest as expected. Ferrari a bit disappointing after their great result in the sprint race. Russell flying a bit under the radar but performing well again.
Super race from Piastri very controlled, Rus did a great job and Max capitalised on 4th as Ferrari just didn’t have it today, tough one for Lec and Lewis, sad for Racing Bulls unlucky and Haas what a race for them and Albon
Racing Bulls were on the wrong 2 stop strategy. With overtaking so difficult, I don't understand why they thought it was a good strategy.
Yeah I think they jumped the gun for undercut and didn’t expect people to do the one stop and was too late to change the strategy
A bit processional, but great stuff from McLaren. Some great moves from Bearman. Let's see if I can get my sleep pattern back on track now :)
Controlled drive by Oscar. Damn, Ferrari really spoiled of what could have been an exciting race by holding up Leclerc for 22 laps. Max extracting every last drop of performance from that tyre eating tractor, solid P4. Brilliant drive from Russell as well. Racing bulls had enough pace to finish in points but instead finished outside due to horrible strategy.
"Max extracting every last drop of performance from that tyre eating tractor, solid P4." Haha, still pretty kind for the car, but it did seem to finally come alive a bit in the end, so maybe, just maybe...Red Bull can take away something from that! Overall not close to being good enough for Red Bull though!
"Damn, Ferrari really spoiled of what could have been an exciting race by holding up Leclerc for 22 laps." Not so. LeClerc should have gotten past on his own if he was that much quicker. And he was not held up for 22 laps at all. It's not like he was right on Lewis' gearbox all that time. Just a dig at Lewis really wasn't it? Red Bull wasn't eating it's hard tyres at all. Seemed to hold on very well as they did for everyone. A little too durable.
doesn't matter anymore doesn't it, they both out, disqualified would like to see how Lewis his reaction was on the Ferrari motorhome
"tractor" Really? It's clearly not the quickest but it ain't a Sauber either.
4th best car finished P4. i.e. driver driving it is doing an incredible job. Credit where it's due. It's a tractor considering Redbull standards. How have they gone from being leaders to 4th best within a year under same regulations needs to be studied.
I'm not sure you can call it the 4th best, I think like last year different cars at different tracks will have an advantage or disadvantage..... All the teams have high standards, calling it a tractor because it isn't leading by 20 secs is a bit disingenuous. The rumours were there last year as to why it dropped pace but who knows.
To be fair, Max did screw up the start, lost 2 places there. Absolutely GOAT move from Max passing Leclerc though. Leclerc used up too much of his tires chasing George. If he hadn't done so, he would have finished ahead of Max. Overtaking wasn't easy in China.
Happens once in a while. He should have stayed on the inside going in to turn 1. But since he decided to go around the outside he had to be conservative of possible squeezing.
Well done to the McLaren's class of the field, pleased for Mercedes, they seemed to have made a step and Ferrari there or there about's too, in for an unpredictable season which is all we can ask for
Unpredictable in what way, because it seems to be either Lando or Oscar for the race wins!?
Anything can happen in F1 Joost. Just gotta take it a race at a time.
Norris was very lucky again (today), because if the race was a few laps longer...he would have dropped out of the top 5! Great win for Piastri! I think I'm going to back/support him.for the title this year!
How was Lando lucky (again)? He had a brake issue and managed it for a good few laps before it started to fail on the last.
I meant he was lucky that the race didnt last a few laps longer (or the brake failure didnt happen a few laps earlier). He managed it well, but this could have ended in disaster very easily! Last weekend he went off the same as Oscar, but could only just keep the car on track, else he would have been mowing the grass right besides Oscar.
Or was he unlucky that he got the brake problem to start with? Depends on how you look at it I suppose.
I think there where about 16 lucky drivers not having cartrouble then? Althought the broken wing of Tsunoda does worry me a little. Without any touch just breaking shouldn't happen.
Nice win for Piastri. Norris doesn't seen happy, but good job bringing home the car. Russell best of the rest. Clean race optimizing. Verstappen best posible result. Nice move over Leclerc. Ferrari good teamresult but expected them to be stronger.
Insane move indeed, nobody overtakes there! His highlight of the race, which was for the rest very uncompetitive for the Red Bull!
Real danger for Norris' WDC this season isn't from Max, it's from Piastri.
100% but that has been clear since the end of last season right, and especially after Bahrain testing!
McLaren car looks unbeatable. The only thing beating them is mistakes by their drivers or pitwall.
Or breakproblems.... If Norris had to do one more lap Russell would have past him.
