Daniel Ricciardo has shared a touching story about his friendship with former Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen. The Australian has announced he got a warming message from Verstappen when he was going through a tough period and people were doubting his future in Formula 1.
Ricciardo seems set to leave Formula 1. The Visa Cash App RB driver is expected to be replaced by Red Bull Junior Liam Lawson for the United States Grand Prix. There has been no comfirmation yet from VCARB but the driver was emotional when speaking to the media after the Singapore Grand Prix.
Ricciardo reflected on his career, including his time at Red Bull Racing. In 2016, he became teammates with Verstappen since the Dutchman recieved a promotion to the top team. Ricciardo remembered the good times with his friend.
"It's a funny thing, because as teammates you just know each other more. You spend so much time together. From a professional point of view, you can get inside each other's head. I got to know how he thinks and he got to know how I think," Ricciardo told Sky Sports. "It's a weird intimacy. We had such a rivalry, but also I think we really enjoyed it and it became such a respect."
"I think Max has grown into obviously a great driver but a very mature young man. He's always been very appreciative of our friendship and supportive - even after Japan this year, I was getting quite a lot of stick and he was one of the only guys who sent me a text and said, 'mate, keep your head up. We know what you're capable of. Don't listen to the noise.' I respect and appreciate him a lot," Ricciardo said of Verstappen.
In the Singapore Grand Prix, Ricciardo helped Verstappen out by beating Lando Norris' fastest lap. This took a point from Norris, though Ricciardo did not get the bonus pont because he finished outside the top 10.

We might not have seen the last of Ricciardo in F1 yet. The main reason why Visa Cash App even decided to to come into the sport and be a main title sponsor of VCARB is because of Ricciardo. It was Danny's management team that got them to sponsor their team. So, now, they are not going to allow Ricciardo to be dropped so easily, so it looks like Horner and Marko are stuck with either having to find a new sponsor for the team or to keep Danny on at VCARB. This is not too dissimilar to why Checo is still kept on at RB, because of the pressure from Telmex & Telco and Carlos Slims, plus the FIA themselves. It always comes down to either being super talented or to have a lot of $$ backing you, so looks like poor Lawson, who comes with no sponsorshiop money backing him might not get that seat after all.
Or DR might get a RBR seat if Checo retires per F1 journalist Joe Saward explained: "One interesting rumour in Singapore was that Perez and Red Bull have worked out a plan that will see him announce his retirement in Mexico, giving him a more gentle exit than being fired and will be less painful for Red Bull sales in the Americas." https://www.si.com/fannation/racing/f1briefings/rumours/f1-rumor-red-bull-to-announce-sergio-perez-retirement-imminently-01j8py62c98m
Good to see that in a competitive environment like F1, friendships can excist.
