La Gazzetta: Red Bull is considering Perez or Hulkenberg as Verstappen's teammate

Alexander Albon has not been convincing this year next to Max Verstappen. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Red Bull Racing is therefore considering replacing the driver with Sergio Perez or Nico Hulkenberg.

While Max Verstappen managed to take second place during the Russian Grand Prix, Alexander Albon didn't even come close to the podium. The British Thai drove most of the race outside the points and only managed to finish in tenth place.

According to the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Red Bull Racing is fed up with the British Thai. The newspaper claims that the team is looking for another teammate for Verstappen. "For the first time, Red Bull wants to go fishing outside its own stables, where there are currently no drivers ready for the big jump. The return of Pierre Gasly, the winner of Monza in the AlphaTauri, is not an option. Dietrich Mateschitz has ambitious plans for the B team and he can't ignore Gasly."

Familiar names an option for Red Bull

La Gazzetta, therefore, says that the team is looking at two well-known names, which have long been the subject of speculation: "Sergio Perez, who has been dropped by Racing Point to hire Sebastian Vettel, and Nico Hulkenberg, who has returned for two races this year.

"The favourite is the Mexican, as he brings important sponsors to fill his own gap and make an economic contribution to the team. Perez will finally have a place to fight for the podium often, an opportunity he won't have with Haas or Alfa Romeo."

Red Bull has meanwhile said that the plan is to continue with Albon, but the past has shown that that doesn't mean certainty for the driver in question.

I am actually hoping that Albon will keep that seat but if there really is a replacement, then Checo will be a much more appropriate team mate for Max than Hulk.

Sergio Perez defeated Hulkenberg in every single season they ran together. Why should RB choose Hulk over Perez?

RBR needs Checo's money with Aston Martin leaving. It's the logical choice..yet RBR does nothing logically..

To be considering Pérez could make sense but why are people always speaking so highly of Hulkenberg?? He has been in F1 for 10 years, started in 178 races and has never been on the podium. He was convincingly beaten by Ricciardo last year in qualifying, races and overall points (even with Ricciardo’s 3 more DNF due to mechanical issues) So what statistics has he got that shows proof of his actual driving abilities?

Hulkenberg should run for politics as he is very popular. Defeated by Perez every single season they ran together.

As part of the plan to get down Perez's ambitions in terms of contract

He’s a likable underdog who did well on his return. Hell, he’s got more points from his brief return than many of the current drivers do in a season. It’s a nice story that folks want a happy ending to. And considering how this year has gone, in and out of F1, who wouldn’t want to see him pull a Lazarus and do well?

But for all the reasons you mentioned he’s too big of a liability to risk that seat on. Strategically it would be better bring in that Japanese driver onboard to light a fire under the Honda development team and as insurance to keep Honda in the game for the next 5 years, or they might soon be going hat-in-hand back to Renault.
