Toto Wolff does not think Formula 1 has been too much about politics in recent years. He tells that in a conversation with Autosport.com. According to the Austrian Mercedes team boss, it is perfectly understandable for teams to stand up for themselves.
A lot has changed in the motorsport class in recent years. At the end of 2021, for instance, Mercedes spoke out firmly against Michael Masi, who did not make a strong impression as race director. It helped cause the FIA to choose to part ways with him and appoint two successors with Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas.
This season saw different regulations, after which Mercedes and several other teams suffered from porpoising. To ensure safety in the sport, the FIA decided to intervene in this too by imposing new rules on the teams. Finally, Red Bull Racing's breaching of the cost cap also caused controversy.
Wolff is convinced that it cannot be avoided that teams sometimes sound the alarm and thinks the discussions are often logical. "It’s about protecting your own structure and I think we all do that," he stated in the interview.
"I think it’s pretty normal. I don’t think there were any more games or less games. Everybody kind of lives to their own standards. I think it was pretty much business as usual, I would say," said Wolff, who hopes to compete for the world title with the German formation next season.
