The fatal accident of Dutch racing driver Dilano van 't Hoff in early July has fully reignited the debate on safety at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Last race weekend, Esteban Ocon was asked for his opinion on the safety of the infamous Belgian circuit.

Dilano van 't Hoff was killed at the age of 18 in a terrible accident while coming up Kemmel Straight. "I think there needs to be a review on everything that happened. It is a tragedy," Ocon began his story during a press briefing with GPBlog and others. "It's not like there's only 20 cars in those championships, there's more than 30. The weather conditions are the thing that makes these conditions very tricky".

Weather conditions at Spa biggest factor

Ocon also says that the bad weather sometimes causes drivers at the back of the field to sometimes drive around the track completely without visibility because of the spray. " The visibility is definitely the main factor in that race. For most of us, we drive blind in those moments" said the Alpine driver. "So I'm sure FIA is looking into it to try and improve the situation. I think we have some mudguard tests here next week or at some point pretty soon which is supposed to help visibility."
