The first day of the Grand Prix weekend in Italy is already over. Carlos Sainz was the surprising number one at the end of the day, no doubt giving the Tifosi hope for a great result on Sunday. Several drivers - like Max Verstappen - were held up by other competitors on their final fast lap, so the result of the second free practice may not tell the story of the session.
Lance Stroll will not be happy seeing the results of this free practice session. Petrol problems caused him to stall early on, so he got no further than last place. The Canadian missed the first session of the day, as Felipe Drugovich was allowed to clock up kilometres. Teammate Fernando Alonso did not find himself at the top of the list either. The Spaniard had to make do with spot seven.
At Monza, it was hectic as always, as soon as drivers wanted to set their ultimate fast lap. Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen were victims of this, preventing Red Bull Racing from posting the fastest time of the day. Still, there certainly does not seem to be a man overboard for the Austrian brigade.
Perhaps having more problems is Lewis Hamilton. The Briton - who extended his contract a day earlier - found himself back in place 17. Teammate George Russell finished ninth, but he too seemed to lack the speed to compete for the top starting spots in qualifying.
