Toto Wolff assumes he will be active in Formula 1 for some time to come. That this is not so obvious from an interview with the Associated Press, in which the Austrian looks back at a tipping point in his career.

Wolff is one of the most successful team principals in Formula 1. The Mercedes team boss won eight constructors' and seven drivers' titles between 2014 and 2021. A unique achievement that has not been matched before or since. Yet Wolff was not always sure he would remain as a team principal in F1.

Wolff doubted future in F1

A stone could fall on my head and how does it look afterwards? That is why I would like to see myself in a few years maybe not going to 24 races, and just to 15. But that is many years away. I see myself in this role for a long time. I cannot imagine doing something else."

"I really struggled in 2020 to make a decision on whether I wanted to stay active in the sport or to be a shareholder and go back to my finance world. I was tired, mentally and physically, but then I came to the realisation that I wanted to continue."

After 2020, the turbulent 2021 season followed for Wolff, with the title fight between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Wolff revealed that moving on also had to do with Hamilton missing out on that title. Wolff, Hamilton and Mercedes are keen to secure that eighth world title.
