Sergio Perez was not happy when he had to let Max Verstappen pass him while he was in a leading position, even though his teammate was clearly faster at the time. During the press conference, however, he tells us that there is more to the story.
There was a promise made to the Mexican by Red Bull Racing, the first time he passed Verstappen after losing two positions due to a mistake. "During the first stint, when I let Max by, I was told that I was going to get it back," Perez explains.
Knowing they were on different strategies he didn't make a big deal about it. Therefore, when he was driving in first place later in the race he assumed he could keep the position. "I felt like I could have gone through and probably given a better shot at my strategy," he explained.
So initially Perez went for a two-stop, which many teams assumed was the best strategy. Red Bull took a gamble by putting Verstappen as one of the few drivers on a planned three-stop strategy, which the Mexican also realized after the race was the winning strategy. "At the end of the day, it turned out to be the three-stop the way to go," he admits.
For the love of God, give the man a 2yr deal already! ?
This will eliminate a LOT of drama!
Red Bull is not OK with their second driver making waves constantly in the Press, which is why Pierre Gasly never returned to the big team, even after he continued to improve, and never will
If you have a grievance with management you handle it like adults, behind closed doors
Max can't be replaced on the team, but they've proven over the years his sidekick can.
If you want to fight your teammate for wins/points there may be mid or rear field teams with an opening next year
It's rare for a second driver to arrive at a top team and outperform the number one but it does happen. Checo is a competent driver but he wouldn't beat Charles at Ferrari, Lewis at Merc, nor Max at Red Bull
If he can't deal with that, he should aim lower
Well, it keeps getting worse. Why did Red Bull feel the need to lie to Checo? It was obvious they were never planning to give him that position back. Using team orders is one thing, but lying to the driver to make him more obedient... No wonder Checo wants to have a talk with them. Team morale is crushed after this.
Perez would never win the race. He was under the assumption that 2 stop would lead him for a win, but as we noticed with Bottas, you would end up a sitting duck at the end of race. So he finished P2 with a 3 stop strategy. He wouldnt win anyways
you see he wouldnt win with a 2 stop. so he finished where he was suppose to finish
anyways its the sensible decision
yes its only the 6th race of the season but could prove very crucial if ferrari and mercedes continue to go down with red bull to the wire with the championship fight
if red bull pull away and it isnt crucial and unnecessary , (we are hearing of a huge aero upgrade in silverstone which would redefine what a “big upgrade” is, without counting merc and aston martin’s b spec sidepods) then max could just pay back the favour when theyre 1-2 at one point and max doesnt really need the win and is comfortably in the lead of the championship (a good example is the mexican gp, which we know honda’s engine simply dominates anyway in the different oxygen content, half a second faster per lap last year while being easier on tyres)
that would be a good place for max to return the favour after abu dhabi and spain, cuz we all know how much a home race win would mean to checo whereas max has already won it like 3 times already
